I Love Teaching…Me Encanta Enseñar

I love teaching.  It is more than the material that teach, though I enjoy that as well.  I’m an English teacher…and my areas of focus are grammar and composition.  The challenge of taking a student who cannot organize or clearly relate his/her ideas…and helping that student to gain the skills necessary to write clearly and competently—this is what I do.  But, teaching is more than that.

Part of the art of teaching is helping people to become “more” human, or is it “less” human?  Recently, we had a discussion in class about “human nature”—are we mostly bad or mostly good?  Of course, we find people doing bad things (stealing, cheating, hurting, even killing)…and we find people doing good things (helping others, cleaning, serving, healing).  So, what are we??  Well, a number of things may happen in our lives to tip us toward one tendency or the other, but we we all come into this world 100% egotistical—self-centered.  Part of the grand task of teaching is helping each other break this basic tendency and to move towards its opposite—love.  Love—in its best meaning—is putting others before ourselves, striving for the benefit of someone else instead of seeking only what is good for me.

Yes, I love teaching.  And, I hope everyone who is going into education will realize that teaching is much more that merely imparting information or skills.  It means helping others become loving human beings.

Me encanta enseñar.  Es más que la materia que enseño, aunque lo disfruto también.  Soy maestro de Ingles…y mis áreas de enfoque son la gramática y composición.  El reto de ayudar un estudiante que no puede organizar ni expresar claramente sus ideas…de ayudarlo ganar las capacidades necesarias para escribir claramente y competentemente—esto es que hago yo.  Sin embargo, ser maestro es más que eso.

Un parte del arte de enseñar es ayudar a gente ser “más” humano, 0 ¿es menos human0?  Recientemente, tuvimos una discusión en clase acerca de la “naturaleza humana”—¿somos primeramente malo o primeramente bueno?  Claro, encontramos a gente haciendo cosas malas (robando, copiando, lastimando a otros, aun matando)…y encontramos a gente haciendo cosas buenas (ayudando a otros, limpiando, sirviendo, sanando).  Entonces, ¿cómo somos?  Bueno, cualquier cosas pueden pasar en nuestras vidas para movernos hacia una tendencia o la otra, pero entramos este mundo 100% egoísta—centrado en nosotros mismos.  Un parte del gran deber de enseñar es ayudar uno al otro dejar esta tendencia y mover hacia su opuesto—el amor.  El amor—en su mejor sentido—es poner otros antes de nosotros mismos, buscando el mejor de alguien en vez de buscar solamente lo que va a beneficiarme.

Sí, me encanta enseñar.  Y, mis esperanza es que toda la gente  entrando esta vocación entienden que enseñar es mucho más que meramente impartiendo información y capacidades.  Enseñar significa ayudar a otros ser seres humanos cariñosos, amorosos…en su mejor sentido.
